Hurricane Dean Relief for the island of Jamaica

As you know the island of Jamaica was struck severely by Hurricane Dean on Sunday August 19, 2007 causing major wind damage, significant flooding and storm surges in several of the island's Southern parishes. Many children and families remain in shelters and have suffered significant loss in their homes and personal belongings.

In response to the needs of the citizens of Jamaica, United States Ambassador to Jamaica Brenda LaGrange Johnson and husband J. Howard Johnson, Ambassadors Sue and Chuck Cobb, and AFJ Chairman, Amb. Glen and Gloria Holden, have each personally pledged US$20,000 to support the roof repairs for one thousand (1000) homes. The "A Thousand Roofs of Love" project will be executed in partnership with the Missionaries of the Poor, led by Father Richard Ho Lung and the American Friends of Jamaica.

There is a tremendous need for roofing materials to repair the damage. The goal is to provide materials for 1000 homes at US$250 per home (allowing $200 for materials and $50 for food). Your contribution of $250 will provide basic food and shelter for these families who are in desperate need. Each home will be provided with 4 pieces of zinc and 4 pieces of plywood for rebuilding.

We are seeking the support of other willing individuals and organizations that are able to participate in this campaign. Donate Here.

We need your support!

"Hurricane Dean wrecked havoc on hundreds and hundreds of dwellings in and around Kingston causing extensive roof damage in many of the poorest neighborhoods. The 'A Thousand Roofs of Love' project will bring tremendous comfort to those suffering communities. "

-- Amb. Sue Cobb
