Interested in donating your time and efforts to the American Friends of Jamaica?

The AFJ offers full-time and part-time volunteer opportunities to individuals interested in supporting our work.

Some activities include:

  • Public Relations
  • Logistics
  • Organizing Trips
  • Contacting Donors
  • Serving as a member of the Organizing Committee for the NY and South Florida galas

University students can also earn credit for participating in internship and volunteer opportunities with the AFJ.

Volunteer Profile



Name: Marcus Wolfe
School: City College, New York

Marcus Wolfe is a brilliant honors undergraduate student majoring in Mathematics at City College New York (CCNY), where he has made the Dean's list. Amongst his accolades, and accomplishments, Marcus' honors include: third placement in the 2008 Junior Achievement Buisness Plan Competition; Mico Old Students Association Award for Mathematics; Honors Fall 2008 Mathematics finals at CCNY and third place in Smith Barney's annual "Why I Write" essay competition.

Marcus' many talents and diverse interests are inclusive of music,poetry, fine art and international travel. The internship has provided Mr. Wolfe with the opportunity to give back to his home country Jamaica; by honing his skills as a young philanthropist and administrator.

Marcus contends that interning with the American Friends of Jamaica is "being representive of how to give back to your home. This is an experience that I will look back at constantly, as I try to figure out, as I grow, is the best way I give back to my country, Jamaica."

Name: Dr. Khitanya Petgrave
School: University of Oxford, Oxford, UK

Khitanya Petgrave's behind the scenes assistance lends itself well to the AFJ framework. A young Oxford Phd., Khitanya divides her time between consulting and assisting non-profits linked to Jamaica. Her doctoral work examined education and development in the Caribbean (primarily Jamaica, Trinidad and Barbados), issuing comparative analyses of cases in Mexico, India and parts of Africa. "My expertise lies in understanding the connections between formal school systems and development strategies" As part of the AFJ team of interns and volunteers, we are happy to have Khitanya on board when her busy schedule permits.
