Annual Jamaican Charities and Scholarship Gala
November 2001
The 20th Annual American Friends of Jamaica Gala was held at the
InterContinental Hotel in New York City. Honorees included Hon.
Robert Nesta Marley, O.M., "I Three" Rita Marley, Marcia
Griffiths & Judy Mowott, Reggae Entertainers, Mrs. Martha (Poppi)
Thomas, and George deMercado.
Consul
General of Jamaica, Dr. Basil K. Bryan, C. D., presents Ms.
Anne F. Sabo, founder of American Friends of Jamaica, with the
Instrument of Appointment, Order of Distinction Commander (C/D.)
(Honorary) for recognition of her philanthropic services rendered
through The American Friends of Jamaica. Ms. Sabo served as
secretary and treasurer and directed fundraising activities
for 21 years until she retired in 2003. |
The
AFJ honored posthumously, a premiere supporter of the American
Friends of Jamaica and MoBay Hope Medical Center, Mrs. Poppi
Thomas, (Martha) with the 2001 International Humanitarian Award.
She was a winter resident of Tryall and cared for and loved
Jamaica. Her son Michael Thomas and nephew, Patrick accepted
the Award on her behalf which was presented by Edgar Cullman
Sr. and Amb. Holden. |
The
Gala's Co-Chairpersons, Mrs. Margaret Bernal, wife of Jamaica's
former Ambassador to the United States Dr. Richard L. Bernal
O.J., who now serves as Director General
of the Caribbean Regional Trade Negotiating Machinery. She and
Mrs. Sylvia (Sonny) served as Chairs of the 20th Awards and
Jamaica Charities and Scholarship in Jamaica.

Honoree George deMercado, 2001's National Achievement Award
and Director of Sales Worldwide for Air Jamaica is joined by
his family son Matthew, Mrs. Scott deMercado (Christina) and
David deMercado in the Whitney Room of the 20th Annual Jamaica
Charities & Scholarship Gala that pays tribute to men and
women who have helped improve the quality of life in Jamaica.
